On August 19, CPM leader Sitaram Yechury was admitted to AIIMS and initially admitted in the emergency ward before being shifted to the ICU. He passed away this afternoon while receiving treatment for pneumonia at the Delhi hospital, with AIIMS reporting his death at 3:05 pm. His family has chosen to donate his body to AIIMS for teaching and research purposes. The body will be at AIIMS for two days before being moved to AKG Bhavan, the CPM headquarters, to allow friends and supporters to pay their respects. Afterwards, the body will return to AIIMS.
A famous and prominent personality in Indian politics, Yechury was a member of the CPM politburo for 32 years. In 2015, he became the party’s general secretary. He represented West Bengal in the Rajya Sabha from 2005 to 2017. Yechury continued the legacy of Sundarayya by becoming the second leader from Andhra Pradesh to hold the position of CPM general secretary.
