WORLD BICYCLE DAY – June 3, 2022

You probably already know that cycling is beneficial to your health—after all, any exercise is better than none, right? But, aside from the physical benefits, did you know that riding a bicycle has a slew of other health advantages? Aside from getting in the recommended 150 minutes of weekly exercise, spending time on the saddle has numerous health benefits.

When is World Bicycle Day 2022?

World Bicycle Day is celebrated on June 3 every year.

History of World Bicycle Day

Almost everyone considers getting their first bicycle and learning to ride it a rite of passage. Despite the bruises and scabs from falling off our bicycles while learning, it is a memory we will never forget.

Bicycling is a useful activity because it allows us to exercise our muscles, reduce our fuel consumption, and feel the wind in our hair in today’s hectic world.

There is truly nothing quite like the rush of riding a bicycle. This, as well as the bicycle’s durability and longevity, is recognized on World Bicycle Day.

Bicycling is good for our physical and mental health, as well as the economy and the environment because it is a simple and sustainable mode of transportation.

Safe infrastructure for walking and cycling, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), is also a path to greater health equity. Walking and cycling can provide a mode of transportation for the poorest urban residents, who often cannot afford private vehicles, while also lowering the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, certain cancers, and even death. Improved active transportation is therefore not only healthy but also equitable and cost-effective.

For various reasons, the UN established World Bicycle Day. Even the poorest people have access to basic transportation with the bicycle, which is as simple as it is.

It all began when Professor Leszek Sibilski organized a grassroots campaign with his sociology class to support a United Nations resolution designating a day for the advocacy and celebration of the humble bicycle around the world.

Sibilski began an academic project in 2015 to investigate bicycles and their role in development. His project sparked a massive movement led by ‘Sustainable Mobility for All,’ which culminated in the United Nations establishing a dedicated international day to promote bicycling.

All 193 member states of the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution declaring June 3 as World Bicycle Day on April 12, 2018. Turkmenistan was a strong supporter of the resolution, which was co-sponsored by 56 countries.

Isaac Feld also designed a logo, which was accompanied by an animation by Professor John E. Swanson depicting bicyclists riding various types of bicycles all over the world. The message here is that a simple contraption benefits everyone and bridges the gap between people from all walks of life. The current blue and white logo for the cause was also created by the two designers.

What is the Theme of Bicycle Day 2021?

The theme of World Bicycle Day is “uniqueness, longevity, and versatility of the bicycle as a simple, reliable, sustainable, and economical mode of transportation.”

Why Do We Love Cycling?

It’s a Fantastic Workout

Cycling is an excellent alternative to running for those seeking cardio or aerobic exercise. Just riding a few miles to the supermarket will burn a lot of calories. If you get out on the trails, you will burn even more calories. Running is also much harder on your joints.

Exploration & Adventure

Cycling’s sense of adventure and exploration is perhaps our favourite aspect of the sport. Bicycle allows you to access trails and areas that are not accessible by car. Cycling is for you if you enjoy beautiful, breathtaking views.

Accessibility

To put it another way, almost anyone can do it. To get on a bike and start riding, you do not have to be a great athlete. You have complete freedom to do things at your own pace.

Beneficial for Environment

Cycling is beneficial not only to us but also to the environment. When you choose to ride your bicycle instead of driving, you are preventing harmful pollution and gas-related emissions from entering the atmosphere.
