The initiative was taken in 1992 by Richard Hunter, Deputy Secretary General of the World Federation for Mental Health.

Till 1994, the day was celebrated without any theme. It was primarily focused on spreading awareness about the main issue of mental health. Later in 1994, depending on Eugene Brody’s suggestions, then the Secretary General of the World Federation for Mental Health, the day was observed depending on the theme “improving the quality of mental health services throughout the world”. Since then, a particular theme has been announced by the World Federation for Mental Health to educate people to cope with mental health issues.
